The CBS drama "The Mentalist" is coming off a very successful Season 3, which was capped off by one of the most explosive season finales in recent memory. Because Patrick Jane ( Simon Baker ) pulled the trigger on a man he believed to be Red John, few may be surprised to learn that Season 4 will open with Jane in jail. Fans also know that this is not Jane's first trip to the slammer, but this time he is in serious trouble. The specific contents of the new season of "The Mentalist" are under wraps, but here are a few predictions for Season 4:

Jane Will Not Stay in Jail Long

Jane is not sorry he shot Red John because he had been planning it for a long time. The fact that his actions have consequences is not really a surprise to him either; what may surprise him is how much support he gets from his team. Lisbon ( Robin Tunney ) and company will probably be key to his release, but there might be more heinous forces at work.

It Was Not Red John

While the debate over was it Red John or not raged for the better part of the summer, it will likely turn out to not have been the serial killer. The show needs that driving force to keep Jane motivated, and when he is released and investigating a seemingly common killing one day, the team will walk in and see that dreaded smiley face.

No Relationship for Rigsby and Van Pelt

Rigsby and Van Pelt have had the most difficult time having a relationship, but after the latest misjudged character to enter Van Pelt's life, she will probably reevaluate her profession. The point is she will likely be a little preoccupied with other tasks before having the chance to get around to having another romance.

Lisbon Deals with Anger Issues

Lisbon is going to be pretty angry that Jane killed a man in cold blood, as she has pointed out on several occasions. She always thought she would be there to stop Jane. Since she ultimately failed, she will likely be on the angry side, which does not bode well for Jane. However, the pair will likely come full circle, but Jane will need to work to get her trust back. She also might be punished for losing control of Jane, but that seems a bit harsh.

Jane Will Change

Once Jane realizes there is a larger game afoot than he believed, he will likely shift gears into full-on revenge mode. Now that Red John, or whoever is pulling the strings, knows that Jane means business, things could get even more deadly serious.

About 300 protesters marched down 56th Street past a theater in Highland Park , hoisting placards with slogans like “Stop Targeting Aliens,” “We’re not Thugs” and chanting “We’re united.”

No, this wasn’t an immigration rights rally. The demonstrators were actually extras who gathered on a hot Monday morning to film a scene for an upcoming episode of “The Mentalist, “ the CBS crime drama that is shooting its fourth season in Los Angeles.

Producers had cordoned off three blocks in the Highland Park community , where the extras milled with another 100 crew members and the show’s stars Simon Baker, Amanda Righetti and Tim Kang, whose characters were investigating a murder amidst the protest.

“This was a big one for us,’’ said location manager David Marmolejo, who spent a week getting the necessary permits and approvals to film the protest march sequence. “Your average Joe doesn’t realize how many people work on a show like this. There are lot of people who are contributing to our local economy.”

To reinforce the point, “The Mentalist” is among the first of several local TV shows that have emblazoned their production trucks with eight-foot long yellow and black banners with the slogan: “FilmWorks. Keep jobs in Los Angeles.”

The banners are part of a two-year, $150,000 marketing campaign launched in December by FilmL.A., Inc., the nonprofit group that handles films permits for the city and incorporated areas of the country. The goal is to remind often film-weary L.A. residents how important their signature industry is at a time when the region has struggled to keep productions from leaving the state.

“The Mentalist” is one of about 45 one-hour dramas and nearly 60 sitcoms that regularly film in Los Angeles, which still remains the largest production hub in the world, notwithstanding growing competition from cities like Vancouver, Canada, Detroit, Michigan, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

FilmL.A. has been plastering thousands of FilmWorks logos on bumper stickers, billboards, bus stops, kiosks and, more recently, film equipment trucks. The campaign also will feature a 90-second public service announcement starring Tia Carrere that will run in Mann Theatres next month.

Warner Bros., which produces “The Mentalist,” has featured the Film Works slogan on a half dozen production trucks and has also included the logos on “Hart of Dixie,” the new medical drama series from the CW. ABC Studios also has agreed to feature the stickers on a half-dozen production trucks, said Todd Lindgren, spokesman for FilmL.A. Inc.

“It’s just to remind the public of the cultural and economic value of this industry to the region,’’ said Lindgren.

Overall, on location production in Los Angeles rose 17% last week compared to same time a year ago due to a surge in feature film activity, including shoots for Sony Pictures Entertainment’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” based on the Swedish crime novel and the romantic comedy “Think Like a Man.” Feature film production activity rose 117% while commercial production increased 8% and TV activity dropped 3%, according to data from FilmL.A.

“The Mentalist,” about a psychic who helps police solve crimes, is set in Sacramento but films heavily throughout L.A., from downtown to the beaches and San Fernando Valley. Next week the crew will shoot a desert scene in Palmdale.

“We’re all over the place,” Marmolejo said. “Hopefully, people will understand that we’re keeping people working and putting food on the table.”

The Mentalist's Patrick Jane is about to get a (perhaps unwanted) blast from the past.

Former Lie to Me and The Practice star Kelli Williams will guest-star on the CBS drama's upcoming fourth season, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively. She will play Beth Flint, a woman who once hired Jane (Simon Baker) during his days as a pretend psychic.

"She still believes he has psychic powers," creator and executive producer Bruno Heller tells us. "When her 9-year-old son, Connor, is kidnapped, she begs Jane to use those abilities to find Connor, putting Jane in a painful position."

Williams' casting follows the news that former Melrose Place star Michael Rady will recur this season as the new CBI Boss. Other guest stars this season include Reed Diamond, who will play a CBI agent who assists Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and her team with an investigation.

The Mentalist hires Michael Rady to play Patrick Jane's new boss

Williams, 41, is best known for her work as Lindsay Dole on The Practice and most recently as Dr. Gillian Foster on Fox's Lie to Me. She has also appeared on Scrubs, Men in Trees and Criminal Minds.

The Mentalist's fourth season kicks off Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10/9c on CBS. Williams' episode is slated to air Oct. 6.

Wanna really mess with Patrick Jane’s head? Hire a kid as his boss.

The Mentalist is essentially doing just that with the casting of Melrose Place‘s Michael Rady as the new head of the CBI.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Rady will play Luther Wainwright, the very educated, fresh-faced special agent in charge of Jane & Co. Although he has very little field experience under his belt, Wainwright’s a fast learner and will eventually be able to go toe-to-toe with PJ.

Rady, who’s also fondly remembered as Greek‘s onetime resident advisor Max, succeeds Aunjanue Ellis’ Madeleine Hightower as the CBI’s No. 1

The Mentalist returns with its fourth season on Sept. 22.

Like many of the suspects in his hit US show the Mentalist, there's more to Simon Baker than meets the eye. Frm humble Tasmanian beginnings to one of the biggest TV stars not just here but around the world, Baker isn't just about Aussie good looks.

He's a celebrated actor, getting his break on the Osca-winning film LA Confidential. Before that, he worked at home in Australia on E Street, Home and Away, and Harbreak High. He's been in a bunch of other hit movies too, including The Devil Wears Prada alongside Anne Hathway.

But its' TV where he's made his biggest impact, first with the thriller The Guardian and nowt the runaway smash The Mentalist, where his character Patrick Jane uses his gift for picking up subtle cues in body language to help him bring criminals to justice.

He's father, with three children – Stella, Claude and Harry – to his wife Rebecca Rigg, also an Austrailian actor (you might remember her as troubled teenager Gabe in A country Ptactice). Baker's family has a big influence on his work: his daughter Stella pushed him to take the role in The Devil Wears Prada so she and her friends could go and see a movie where he didn't die for once.

He's an advocate for social justice too, playing in Soccer Aid 1010 as part of the Rest of the World team which faced England. Even tough Baker's penalty shot was saved by the keeper, the Rest of the World went on to win the shootout and take the coup from England for the first time. He's always aware of the political ramifications of the work he takes on, even on projects that a first glance might look loke pure fun, like George Romero's zombie movie, Land of the Dead, with its underlying commentary of modern American life.

Combine these things with a string of award nominations (including a humble Aussie Logie back in 1993 for his work on E Stree) and you get a modern Australian success sotry.

Of course, there a places in the world further from Hollywood than Launceston, but not many! After Tasmania, Baker lived in Ballina NSW, which no doubt gave him a taste of the beach life he later found with his own family in Malibu… though he still describes the surfing back home in Australia as prettier and cleaner than it is in the US. And while he was working and living the US he says he missed being able to get a good meat pie.

So he walks the re carpet with the industry's top stars, gets nominated for top awards, is a major commodity for global television drama…yet at the end of the day he still manages to find time to watch Gossip Girl with his daughter once her homework is done.

All this makes Simon Baker the perfect ambassador for Samsung's entire range of products including Smart TVs – he's equally about quality family time as he is about the latest in blockbuster entertainment.

Cosying up with actor Simon Baker inside his trailer, it seemed the opportune time to pop the big question.

Is this Aussie actor as good as the character he plays - the Mentalist's Patrick Jane - at gleaning information from people in an ever so unorthodox way?

The razor sharp mind and wit of his character are not needed on the set of the for the next 15 minutes, which gives me quarter of an hour to gather some of Baker's secrets - and upcoming plots - for 20/20 viewers.

"Nice ring..." he says, pointing to my engagement ring.

I blush. He laughs. Simon Baker, it appears, has mastered the technique both inside and outside of the Warner Brothers Studio; he just successfully threw me off my game.

"The thing about training for it, is if you're good at it it's kind of seamless. So for me it was more about learning how these guys presented what they do. And they present it in such a disarming, relaxed, comfortable way you don't feel like you're being conned at all. That's part of the nature of it."

And the California Bureau of Investigation's Patrick Jane is supposed to be one of the best. He says things that make you feel uncomfortable, sometimes it feels like he's simply gone too far. But it's always for a reason. The independent consultant gets a reaction, and with the reaction comes information. Case solved and viewers satisfied.

"I love it because he says often what people think and they're too courteous or polite to say it but most of the time, and this is always the hard thing, there's always meant to be a purpose behind why he does it."

The hunky actor's rise to the top in American prime time drama has not been as meteoric as you might think. It's been a hard slog since he began in the 1980s. Prior to The Mentalist, he was best known for his roles in The Guardian, The Devil Wears Prada, LA Confidential and The Ring 2.

Unlike many single young actors hell-bent on Hollywood domination, he's had to juggle family and career to make it.

"It has definitely been a process, I came here with a wife and a child, if I could make a living that was a good thing. I was more focused on that, that we couldn't starve my family and wait for the right kind of job that turned me into a movie star."

Despite his success Baker appeared shocked when I informed him that amongst the stars of ABC/Disney's productions, my friends - predominantly women in their 30s - were pretty smitten on him. It must be all that humble pie the blokes eat Down Under.

"Maybe it's more a brother, sister thing," he laughs.

Romance

Hmmm.... maybe. The 43-year-old is married with three children so perhaps he has an insight into the plotline concerning Jane's potential romance?

"I'm interested in knowing what you think," he says, once again turning the tables in our interview. "We constantly discuss these things."

He's talking about the flirtations between Jane and Agent Lisborn, his trusted colleague.

"There's more stuff to play out in that relationship, there's been little moments on the show, but nothing's been consummated. I think there's obviously an affection between the two of them; whether that's a lust or a love... or just a mutual respect... "

He continues to weave delicately around the question.

"Then you have to ask the question - is the Jane character a sexual character? You know he asked that woman out at the end of the second season which was a little awkward and heart breaking for him to do."

But here's the most concrete hint so far.

"Out of sheer boredom I want the character to develop and new things to happen."

According to Baker there's a true science to character development

"Once you have a character that the audience goes, 'I really like this guy,' you really have to be careful with what steps you take."

With the plethora of police dramas available to view, this show attempts a point of difference; at times it earnestly tries to be a police drama, while at the same time it parodies the genre.

"I think sometimes it does it successfully and sometimes it does it unsuccessfully. I think sometimes we get too broad, you can never make the perfect cake."

But no examples of the imperfect "cake" were forthcoming.

"Then I'm incriminating myself. It's a silly kind of cop show really but underneath what we're really dealing with is a guy that's really flawed who's trying to redeem himself. He's a really dark character, he just doesn't wear that close to his skin."

He's due back on set - but he's not rushing. Talent is God here in Los Angeles, especially talent like Simon Baker. He's cracked a city with a very tough exterior.

"I don't think Los Angeles is a place you actually fit in. You can make it work for you or just resist and it's sort of like to me there's no point in resisting. I'm not here on a holiday; it's where I go to work. Australia's so much more beautiful than it is here but if you scratch the surface there's sort of a beauty to be found."

Time's up, the publicist has knocked for the third time, but before leaving I have a point I need to clarify. I had to make sure that Simon Baker, aka Patrick Jane, knew that I never blushed when he pointed to my engagement ring - it was most definitely the blusher I'd applied earlier.

Baker simply smiles.

With that signature slow-burn smirk, Aussie actor Simon Baker would have us watching him read a cereal box. Luckily, "The Mentalist" is far more entertaining -- in the show's fourth season, Baker's pull-no-punches, psychic crime-scene investigator Patrick Jane is tried for his vengeful murder of killer Red John.

"The Mentalist" premieres Thursday, September 22, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS

Season 4 of The Mentalist is about to air next month in the US after a gripping season 3 finale. Simon Baker in an interview told TV Guide: "We're really stepping outside The Box with this one -- we'll see how far we can push Patrick and still keep him empathetic and likable in The Eyes of the audience" referring to the season 3 finale. There may be cynics out there who will No Doubt quibble over this, but Patrick Jane is one character who will always be close to most viewer's hearts. He's been through so much in his personal life; suffered the heartaches, but through it all he carried on when others would have failed and given up at times of such adversity. Losing someone close is tough, but to lose two family members at the same time to the heinous crime of cold blooded murder is unthinkable, let alone unbearable.

Becoming a police consultant for the CBI makes me believe Patrick truly wants to repent for his past actions. He may come across as arrogant and cocky, especially to those who don't know him (not many know the real Patrick Jane). To me, that appears to be an act to an extent. Deep down he has a hole he can't fix; he wants his redemption like anyone else. That in part can be put down to his upbringing, his carnival life. In the episode 2.10 Throwing Fire, where we flash to his family, his father in particular, it's apparent Patty (I used to call him that since season 1) is angered and abhors what he has to do; conning victims out of their money, especially when it's a matter of life and death. Maybe he conned and taunted one too many in Red John and thus he focused his actions onto Patrick. The question has to be asked, if his family weren't murdered would Patrick still be a con or a mentalist?

Which leads nicely on to the Red John and the revenge aspect of the show and Patrick's character. In his position (though murder is never right or can be condoned) wanting to exact revenge on Red John is understandable. Thus highlighting the fundamental flaw in Patrick: he's good, but not that good (as a person that is.) Was shooting 'Red John' justice for his wife and daughter or retribution, which mirror each other so closely. Why would he not want to kill him, especially since he told Lisbon that since Day One. Yes, Red John appears dead, but is he really? The entire premise, for the most part, of The Mentalist was about Red John and how this deadly thorn in Patrick's side taunts him in every way possible. Leaving behind smiley faces in the blood of his victims. He made this fight personal when he killed Patrick's family -- as the messages were also personally directed at Patrick.

Is Red John dead? Personally I don't believe he is, but I could be wrong. He's used so many people and only now are we seeing the extent of his organization. An evil poison spreading into every vein he can seep into. For Red John has many minions, acolytes, whatever you want to term them. Those that would do anything for him and yet so staunchly loyal that they would rather die than be taken alive. Loyal or just plain afraid? He can kill anyone, anytime, demonstrated many times over in the prisoner episode of season 1.11 Red John's Friends, season 1.23 Red John's Footsteps, season 2 His Right Hand, season 3.24 Strawberries and Cream. More importantly he remains in the shadows.

Simon Baker: "He's [Patrick] at a point where he's desperate -- desperate and calculating -- and he needs the help of the mole." (In season 3.) Simon mentions the episode Red John's Friends, where he wrote the message, "he is man." Commented Simon, "I think we could say at this point that "he is man" was meant to be "he is many" -- that raises the question if Jane ever gets Red John; is he getting the real Red John? Reminded me of the season 1.2 So It Begins episode of Alias when Sydney (Jennifer Garner ) tells Vaughn (Michael Vartan) she'll hand him SD-6 in a matter of months and he shows her the bigger picture, the map of SD cells everywhere. He tells her "this is not about cutting off the arm of the monster; this is about killing the monster." So too is Red John's domination.

Nicely following to the season 2 finale and Kristina Frye (Leslie Hope). Now there is someone who definitely was in cahoots with Red John. She had to be, why else would she be spared when she was supposedly kidnapped, when everyone else is always killed? Bear with me, but at one point, it's conceivable or plausible that she herself was or could be Red John. The voice distorter used in the season 2 finale, Red Sky at Morning, almost sounds like a woman (one reason why Red John May have been given a high-pitched voice in season 3. (Remember they didn't get Bradley Whitford to play him yet.) If you listen out to the way Kristina spoke and then to Red John's syntax, mannerisms when he talks to Patrick at the end; they sound almost too similar to be a coincidence. Not to mention at the beginning of this episode she talks to the waiter and says, "Roll tide." Red John also speaks this to Patrick at the end, as well as saying, "you know who I am." (Double meaning there perhaps.) And The Tyger poem. Question being how could he have known about this, when Kristina said it at the beginning; either leading us to believe she is Red John, or that she is very closely connected to him. Remember the all important concept of foreshadowing.

Also the 3.23 episode Strawberries and Cream Part 1, where Gupta (Ravi Kapoor) resorted to using a voice distorter too, but still it was apparent it was really his voice. Oh one thought -- Brett Stiles (Malcolm McDowell) and his cult where it's so easy to manipulate members/followers, which is so uncannily similar to Red John; has some sort of a connection to Red John. He spoke to Patrick about Kristina in the season 3 episode when she was returned.

The Blood on His Hands episode, when she was returned wasn't too convincing Kristina was catatonic, but more like manipulating Patrick into believing she was. Kristina always managed to insinuate herself into CBI investigations. She appears to be Patrick's opposite in a way, he's a mentalist, she's a psychic, supposedly. When sHe Went on TV and spoke about Red John, she did the same thing Patrick did with Red John, confronting him on TV and then disappeared, allegedly kidnapped. She didn't sense the interviewer would be killed and why spare Kristina. We know Patrick doesn't believe in psychic hocus pocus.

Since season 1, in the episode Red Flame, when he and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) had that intense conversation, that when he finds Red John, "I'm going to cut him open and watch him die slowly. Like he did with my wife and child. If you have a problem with that, we should talk." Lisbon replies Red John will be tried in court. Patrick: "Not if I'm still breathing." With Lisbon having to do her duty: "If you try and do violence to him, I will try and stop you. If you succeed in doing violence to him, I will arrest you." Will Lisbon arrest him, well he will be arrested there's No Question about that. Will Lisbon want to arrest him and not help Patrick, more so after what she and the rest of the team have endured. Also if he did shoot him dead, it will deprive Patrick of the slow torture he so relishes for Red John.

Patrick may have a high price to pay for this revenge, but just maybe Red John planned it that way; watching from a safe distance. Unless of course the show is taken in a completely different direction.

When The Mentalist first aired in the UK and there were shows about it, one theory was compounded that Red John was none other than Patrick Jane. Five ran some great ads for season 1 of the show, the red smiley idents were used in an advertising campaign with little messages in red, such as "Oh you read this page? That's slightly surprising." "Your attention span tells me a lot about you." "I've been watching you closely. Tomorrow night is your turn." "If I'm right about you. We should meet tomorrow." Bet plenty of people had dreams about those!

It was perhaps last season's boldest finale. After three seasons, The Mentalist's Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) finally came face-to-face with the man he believed to be Red John (guest-star Bradley Whitford), the serial killer who killed Jane's wife and daughter. The two had a long, intense conversation as Jane tried to confirm that he was indeed in the presence of his nemesis. Once he did just that, Jane took his vengeance, shooting the man in broad daylight and surrendering himself to the authorities that came charging in.

But did he really kill Red John? And if so, what does that mean for both Jane's future (is he going to jail?) and the show's long-term goals? TVGuide.com chatted with creator and executive producer Bruno Heller to get the answers.

TVGuide.com: Now that some time has passed, how do you feel about the Season 3 finale?

Bruno Heller: I was very pleased. Bradley Whitford is a fine actor and gave a nice, creepy, solid performance. I hope the audience out there was pleased with it. Certainly, it throws a big stone in the pond. Coming into this period in the show, you want to shake things up a little.

TVGuide.com: How did you land on Bradley Whitford for the part? He's not necessarily the go-to guy for serial killer roles.

Heller: It was a tricky part because you need someone who's both powerful and charismatic, but to some degree very normal — just a regular guy. And [Bradley's] wonderful at playing a regular guy. I don't think he's ever been used in that way before, as a villain of that magnitude. It was great fun for him to play someone like that.

TVGuide.com: You've often said Red John is Patrick Jane's "white whale." Was it a challenge to write the episode where Jane gets his guy?

Heller: Writing that episode was not a challenge. Writing this next episode is the challenge. [Laughs] But that's exactly what you want: a challenge and an interesting dramatic corner to write one's way out of. And I think we've definitely done that. I think the challenge is moving the story forward without making the audience feel that they've been betrayed or conned or led astray. And I'm fairly confident — as confident as one can be — that they will not feel that way.

TVGuide.com: I assume you're speaking of the people who have already decided that Bradley Whitford isn't really Red John?

Heller: Jane, in that scene, is kind of suspicious and dubious. The audience is in the same position as Jane. But Jane believes that this is Red John.

TVGuide.com: Either way, how will the new season deal with the fact that Jane murdered a man?

Heller: He is arrested for murder. Jane correctly says, "This guy said he was Red John, and he held a gun on me. It was self-defense." But the police reply that... no gun was found. So, within five minutes of the season opener, Jane is in jail for homicide with no way out, apparently. The immediate problem is not so much, "Is Red John alive or dead?" but, "How the hell am I going to get out from under a death sentence?"

TVGuide.com: Will Lisbon (Robin Tunney) or any of Jane's teammates be able to help?

Heller: He has to rely on them to get him out of that mess. And then the question does become: Are these temporary friends, or is there a deeper bond there? ... Also, [Jane] and Lisbon, to some extent, start questioning his sanity. He swears there was a gun, and this guy said he was Red John, but there is no proof.

TVGuide.com: But the audience saw the gun. So, is someone still following Red John's orders?

Heller: An intelligent viewer might think so.

TVGuide.com: Does the murder change Jane as a character? Are you worried audiences will be turned off by his actions?

Heller: Through all of that charm and joie de vivre, there is a certain steely hardness about him. There has always been an edge to him, and I think that is something the audience has always been able to see. If they didn't see it before, they're certainly seeing it now. I think, certainly in the first year, people might not have been willing to accept that kind of merciless streak in his character, but I hope they will come along with it now.

TVGuide.com: Will he keep that edge all season, or will we still see some of the fun-loving Jane we've gotten to know?

Heller: The latter. It's always a balance. When Jane sees a boundary or an edge, he wants to see how far he can press it. But we're never going to put the show in a place where people are pushed away by its edginess. For good or ill, it's always been a show that you can watch with your grandmother and your child, and we very much want to keep it that way. But, you know, grandmothers like edge and children like edge.

TVGuide.com: How much does that finale change the show for you?

Heller: Every season you kind of take a chance to reset things. ... Last season was almost serialized. There was a great deal of plot and story that you could follow through the whole season. We're going to need less of that this season. There still will be an overarching narrative going on, but it won't be quite so intricate. From Jane's point of view, he doesn't want to play games any more. [He wants] to pull back a bit from that kind of obsessive chase, because it's the obsessive chase that has gotten him into problems in the first place,.

TVGuide.com: But if Jane really did kill Red John, what does the next chapter of the show look like?

Helller: If you got your heart's desire, and your heart's desire was a kind of bitter and dangerous pill to swallow, how would you go on with the rest of your life? What does revenge mean? Because, as you saw in that final moment, after you've killed someone, what's left? It's not like love. Love makes things grow. That kind of bitterness and hate kills things. But then, what do you do? That's what the show would be about when Red John is dead.

The Mentalist returns Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10/9c on CBS.

When I initially took over this column the first thing I wrote was a bunch of stuff regarding my thoughts and feelings regarding various season finales of different shows that I watch and enjoy. In the comments section of that first column someone asked why the hell I didn't write anything about the second season ending of The Mentalist. And as I made mention of it the next week in response, I didn't comment on it because up until that point I hadn't watched a single episode of the show previously. Stands to reason, no?

But that is no longer the case. While I am in no way entirely caught up the fact that TNT has begun airing back to back season one episodes onWednesdays has helped a great deal, while I have also been tuning in to season two repeat broadcasts on CBS. And I have to say, this is a very enjoyable if not always by the book procedural.

Aussie actor Simon Baker (whom I've only previously seen in a bit part in the great L.A. Confindential) plays Patrick Jane, a now admitted fake psychic whom uses his unusual skill set to help the fictional California Bureau of Investigations solve murders as a special consultant. What caused him to shift from swindler to crime fighter was the fact that he went out of his way to insult and insinuate he would help catch a notorious serial killer named Red John. Red John took great offense to this and killed Jane's wife and young daughter to cut the ‘psychic' down to size and teach him a modicum of humility.

What makes this show work first and foremost is Simon Baker and his portrayal as the titular character. He makes Jane playful, mischievous, mysterious, as well as being a deeply wounded and troubled soul. Jane is able to root out the heart of a situation just with simple and direct highly toned observational skills as well as a knack to decipher unconscious body language and basic human behavior. Well, and he's not above hypnotizing someone without their realizing it as he does so, even though that's expressly against the rules of a proper criminal investigation.

This often brings him into conflict with Lisbon, (Robin Tunney) the agent in charge of the team that he works with. She only continues to put up with this direct thinking out of the box jackass because he pretty much is right on the money a healthy percentage of the time. He helps close cases that they may often wouldn't have been able to do so without him being there. So while she tolerates him to a degree, she can't help but to also respect him for what he is capable of.

The supporting cast is also very solid. Although I have to wonder what the hell is up with Tim Kang's Cho character. The dude is an emotionless cipher of a cop thus far as much as I've seen. Both Van Pelt (very hot) and Rigsby (very likable and relatable) have personalities of their own. But this prick is just a cold and calculating cop doing his job. And while there's nothing wrong with that per se, while he is clearly the most professional by the book cop one should ever hope to see? There's a backstory there, that I've yet to witness, or has yet to be shown. Color me intrigued.

But what I really like is the fact that for most of the time this is a week to week whodunit where Jane pretty much closes each case by the end, the specter of Red John is always lingering in the background. That's Jane's windmill, his one true weakness. And everyone on the team knows it. To the point that when he tilts his focus in that direction, he's earned their respect enough that they are willing to follow him no matter the consequences.

So again, while I'm still not caught up (and still haven't seen the season 2 finale, which I hear is fantastic) I feel safe in saying that this is a great and highly enjoyable show. I'm in. Love it.

And yeah. Again while I haven't seen the season two finale, I feel safe in saying that Bradley Whitford wasn't Red John. Red Herring. Not over yet. Too easy. There's no way that they would end this juicy storyline this early. It's just another hoop for Jane to leap through.

The Mentalist cast has just received their first script of the new season, which involves the aftermath of the shocking reveal of Red John (Bradley Whitford), as well as Patrick Jane's (Simon Baker) attempts to extricate himself from the law. "But we all suspect this is not the last we'll see of Red John," Owain Yeoman adds. Though Bradley's character was killed, Owain reminds us that a Season Two episode hinted that Red John may be more than one person. "On the wall of a bathroom in Mexico in blood was written, 'He is man,' which is believed to be short for 'He is many.' Red John may be a whole network of people, so Bradley may not have been the guy. Red John is a series-long cliffhanger for us, so who knows?"

ANZ Bank has launched the next phase of its brand campaign, with a TV ad featuring Simon Baker, the Australian actor from The Mentalist.

The campaign launched yesterday across Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Vietnam withe television, print and out-of-home executions. It will launch in New Zealand in August.

Featuring Australian actor Simon Baker, the campaigns sees him reprise his role as character Patrick Jane from US TV series The Mentalist under a licensing deal with Warner Bros.

The bank chose the character of Patrick Jane because it believes he personifies the characteristics of ANZ, "insightful, sophisticated, worldly but with a strong connection to Australia."

The campaign is the first developed by Whybin TBWA since being appointed to the account in March, replacing M&C Saatchi.

ANZ group managing director, strategy, M&A, marketing and innovation, Joyce Phillips, said: "The evolution of our brand through this campaign reflects a need for a globally consistent campaign that supports our super regional strategy. It will help build awareness and relevance of ANZ in our key emerging markets while reflecting what it is that makes us different from other banks."

ANZ group general manager, brand, Louise Eyres, told AdNews: "The campaign is part of a long-term integrated strategy across the region. It's an evolution of what we started 18 months ago, a commitment to our super regional strategies across multiple geographies.

ANZ Bank has launched its first global brand campaign, promoting its brand promise of an uncomplicated, customer-centric bank. The campaign, by Whybin TBWA, features Patrick Jane, lead character from the television series 'The Mentalist'.

ANZ selected the character for his 'mentalist' persona, saying it was "the ideal personifcation of ANZ's brand as insightful, sophisticated, worldly but with a strong connection to Australia (Jane is played by Australian actor Simon Baker)."

"“Patrick Jane knows what people are thinking because he lives in their world – he’s an
observer of life and that’s what we strive to be,” ANZ group managing director for strategy, mergers and acquisitions, marketing, and innovation Joyce Phillips said.

The objective behind the campaign is to project a globally consistent campaign that builds on the development of ANZ's new global brand. This was formed in 2009 when the bank acquired a range of assets from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The campaign was launched in Australia and Asia on 3 July, with New Zealand to follow

WE LOVE SOAPS TV: Tell me about your role on THE MENTALIST, coming up on CBS, February 17th at 10 p.m.?

Drew Garrett: This is a one episode guest star spot. I’m playing a guy named Jeff Loomis who is the son of the victim for that episode. It all revolves around a trailer park community who are all prospecting for gold. I am in about four scenes and have great camera time. It’s not like I’m in the background. It won’t be a tease. I am early on in the episode, and then I come back in later. Simon Baker, who plays THE MENTALIST, uses my character as a resource because I’m the son of the guy who is dead. He needs to tap into my psyche and interview me in order to find out the background of the victim. He basically uses myself and my father’s girlfriend to get clues, as well as some other suspects.

WE LOVE SOAPS TV: So you are playing the son of a murder victim. I imagine this will allow us to see even more of your range?

Drew Garrett: Yes, that is going to be involved in this role. I’m feeling good about the work I did. You never really know. It’s hard for me to leave a job and feel good about it until I see it, but I’m pleased with this.

WE LOVE SOAPS TV: Did you have that on THE MENTALIST?

Drew Garrett: Yes, I was really impressed with Simon Baker. The whole cast is awesome, but Simon Baker is the big draw. I was really impressed with how legitimate and talented that guy is. He really knows what he is doing. It was cool for me as a young actor to work with him, see what his method is, and what his process is for getting to where he needs to be. He definitely did that. I was not only having a good time but I was enjoying learning from a superior as well.

What’s striking about “Margin Call” as a film is, one, there are no sex scenes, exploding buildings, car chases or Oscar-baiting sobs; and, two, its cast includes stars like Demi Moore, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto and Stanley Tucci, who’ve done movies with all of that.

The J.C. Chandor-directed flick is self-contained to a period of time over 24 hours, set sometime in 2008, with the majority of its scenes shot on a single floor of a financial office building. The actors didn’t stay in trailers but instead spent the 17 days of shooting staying on a floor of the building, like living and breathing the financial life and tumult of “Margin Call.” It’s a little like re-living the horror of the financial crisis, the Early Days. It was bought by Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate before it even premiered last week at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Moore, Quinto and other “Margin Call” co-stars Paul Bettany, Penn Badgley and Simon Baker were seated at a table of a bar in a basement club in Park City, discussing the closeness of the shoot.

“We had a real sense of camaraderie because we were so fortunate to shoot 85% of the film in one place. And we were all on the 42nd floor of a high rise in Manhattan and all of our rooms were on that floor.”

“You can be really spoiled,” Bettany said. “This movie we have 50 pages to shoot and you see actors in a state of preparedness and often you don’t. Everybody’s onsite and turned up. There’s a level of fear when you look at your script and go, ‘I got like 15 fucking pages tomorrow. I’d better step up.’ And I found it really fulfilling, so much more than any other movies I’ve been in.”

During that moment in Park City, none of the actors had seen the final cut of the film, yet, so sometimes details were hazy. And the cast had a little fun in “remembering.”

“There were some fun sex scenes, which got cut out,” Bettany said matter-of-factly.

“Yeah, of me sleeping my way up to the top,” Moore laughed.

Yeah, right.

“I wanted Demi’s character but they said I couldn’t have it, so I had to settle for Will Emerson,” Bettany said of his gum-chewing, fast-talking slave-to-the-system. “But I was very attracted to Will Emerson because he seems sort of slightly amoral, like he was suffering from Asperger’s.”

“I mean, yeah, I don’t think you get a cast or ensemble of this caliber without material that is excellent and compelling and diverse in terms of like you’re saying these characters are really different facet of the psyche and that is something that I think we all were really excited about,” Quinto says.

Quinto’s character Peter Sullivan plays an analyst at the major financial firm, a faceless number-cruncher -- until he uncovers a major problem in the company’s assets strategy. This discovery leads to some ethical and moral dilemmas for the rest of the group, all the way to the top.

That moral gray zone is perhaps where art meets science.

“Probably one of the most creative people I know is my accountant,” Baker laughed. “Actually the politics of it all is interesting to me and the vulnerability and the sort of aggression. We joke, but lot of these guys are… on the autism spectrum in a lot of ways. They’re so detached from the emotional aspect of what they’re doing that it becomes a creative endeavor.”

“I mean we met a bunch of financial people to prepare. And one guy, he’s talking about the percentage of poison assets rising. And I’m thinking, ‘What are poison assets?’ And you realize that poison assets are failing mortgages. But if you call them ‘poison assets,’ they’re not people losing their dream and failing and falling by the wayside. They’re just poison assets,” Bettany says. “They made money out of nothing. They made more money – or, rather – made and spent more money that actually exists, you know?”

Quinto expands: “That was definitely the most interesting facet of Peter for me was the notion that he represents a perspective that is really troubled about what he discovers. And yet by the end of the film, he accepts what they offer him in terms of a promotion within the company.”

“I think the most striking characteristic of the entire film is that [the financial collapse] proved that [firms] took ghost numbers and then put real money in their pocket, which is what they had to do in order to enable the rest of the country and then the rest of the world. It’s just this massive ghost operation. And they’re just sitting there, giddy, getting hard at the idea. at the idea. It’s really amazing,” Badgley said. “I did some research and I got down with a couple of bankers… they’re incredible. The confidence they have, to be my age—I’m 24—and to think of doing that?”

Set over the course of 24 tense hours at the start of the 2008 financial crisis, filmmaker J.C. Chandor’s “Margin Call” provides an inside look at how one fictional investment firm reacts after entry-level analyst Peter Sullivan (played by Zachary Quinto, who also co-produced the film) discovers a flaw within their financial system. One by one, all of Sullivan’s bosses (including Kevin Spacey, Simon Baker and Jeremy Irons) descend on the company’s Manhattan office building and try desperately to find a solution to their woes.

Picked up for distribution by Roadside Attractions for $1 million at the Sundance Film Festival, the star-heavy indie feature was clearly a great bonding experience for all the actors. Co-stars Quinto (”Star Trek”), Baker (”The Mentalist”), Paul Bettany (”A Beautiful Mind”), Demi Moore, and Penn Badgley (”Gossip Girl”) sat down to talk about their experiences shooting the film together. The Wall Street Journal: Just watching everyone interact, it seems like all of you got along swimmingly on set. Had any of you worked together before?

Zachary Quinto: I had seen Kevin a number of times in London and met him through his producing partner, though I didn’t speak to him until after he had signed on to the project. He responded much more to the material than to me.

Demi Moore: You also did an amazing job of nurturing the film.

Simon Baker: We were working with these good blokes that we wanted to do well.

Penn Badgley: I mean, most producers are balding and old and whatever, and [Quinto and his co-producers] were not. I was shocked as how adept they all were as first-time producers.

Zachary Quinto: There’s an ease we have with each other. I’ve known my producing partners each for half my life; I’ve known Neal [Dodson] since I was 15, so we go way back. I think that our shorthand and history with each other was a great genesis for bringing people in and getting people to trust us.

Penn Badgley: And they’re all so competent in different ways. They compliment each other sort of perfectly. The company works.

Demi Moore: There was an interesting short time frame every day, so there was also a high level of appreciation every day, whether spoken or not spoken. That goes a long way when you’re working all night.

Paul Bettany: Something happened on this tiny little movie that’s never happened to me before, ever, which is that we shot a scene on the first day of the movie, and they did a s— job. And then they re-shot the scene. On the day, I said, ‘I don’t think we got it,’ and they said, ‘We agree,’ and even though we had basically no budget, we re-shot it.

Simon Baker: What scene?

Paul Bettany: The scene where we drive over the bridge.

Simon Baker: That’s a good scene.

Demi Moore: Tell us your story Simon.

Simon Baker: I was a lonely child and I was promised a love scene with Demi Moore so I showed up. No, I read the script and I don’t really know much about the financial world. I thought it was interesting and it brought it into sort of laymen’s terms It felt like a normal workplace and the politics of a workplace. For a lot of people that had that period of time, those decisions that were made had an enormous impact on so many Americans. It seemed so simple. As far as the script goes, it’s people in a room discussing, “Do we do this or do we do that?”, and the outcome we all heard about. Just shockwaves through every town in America, but it really boiled down to these people having these kind of petty arguments in the room about “Do we do this or do we do that? Baker 'doesn't want Mentalist romance'

The Mentalist star Simon Baker has admitted that he doesn't want his character Patrick Jane to get together with Lisbon (Robin Tunney).

He told TV Guide that the pair's current relationship has "a nice adolescent quality".

"It's like [when] you have a friend who's a girl, and you can kind of hit on them," he explained. "But then they look at you like, 'Did you just hit on me?'"

However, Baker admitted that Jane and Lisbon's relationship could progress in the future.

"When [the series ends], we could get them together," he suggested.

His co-star Tunney previously suggested that federal agent Libson is "unsentimental" and "kind of a lone wolf".

Baker also revealed that the show's third season will conclude with a two-hour finale and warned fans to expect "a lot of big 'holy crap' moments".

Millions of dollars were raised during a special celebrity charity telethon last night for victims of Australia’s devastating floods.

Stars such as Hugh Jackman, Simon Baker, Terri Irwin, Bindi Irwin, The Veronicas, Kasey Chambers, Tina Arena and X Factor Australia winner Altiyan Childs supported the telethon, hosted by Eddie McGuire, Leila McKinnon and Karl Stefanovic.

Cheers to a couple of old pros for bringing character to The Mentalist.

Richard Roundtree and Pruitt Taylor Vince provided the dramatic muscle in an otherwise lightweight episode about a DOA at an MMA fight. The man once known as "the black private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks" — Shaft! — proved he still knows his way around the ring as a sly trainer. If only Roundtree could recur, like he did in recent years on Heroes and Desperate Housewives. Maybe Simon Baker's Thomas Jane could distract himself from obsessing over Red John with a few boxing lessons?

Meanwhile, Vince, an Emmy winner as a serial psycho on Murder One, returned as J.J. LaRoche, an eerily calm internal-affairs officer investigating the mysterious demise of a cop killer in CBI custody. An even cooler cucumber, Cho (Tim Kang), lied to J.J.'s face to protect teammate Rigsby (Owain Yeoman), but one can only assume — and hope — we haven't seen the last of LaRoche.

Simon Baker returns to Sacramento tonight for a new episode of ‘The Mentalist’. The primetime drama has the man with an accent sounding like an American for a good 47 minutes (counting all the commercials) and Baker’s fans adore it. The actor was on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday night talking about his career as an actor, but before he was in any film, he was pursuing a nursing career.

Well, he sort of wanted to be a nurse. According to Simon Baker, he was in nursing school for three months because of the ladies. Using the art of fine calculation, the actor shared how he thought finding the perfect woman meant having good numbers to draw from.

“We figured that the odds were really good for a heterosexual nursing student. 85% woman, 80% of the men who did it were gay. I don't think I was that bad of a student,” says Simon Baker.

What he didn’t realize after getting into school was the studying that came along with all the ladies leaving him to pursue other avenues for career choices. No doubt he is happy to be part of The Mentalist as it had solid fans, great numbers and Simon Baker is adored.
