Simon Baker: I’m shy in real life

Simon Baker is extremely “shy” and has to work “very hard” to play a charming ladies’ man on TV.

The Australian actor has made a name for himself playing arrogant lotharios in movies and television shows. He seduced Anne Hathaway’s innocent character in The Devil Wears Prada, and beds dozens of women in his hit US series The Mentalist. However, in real life Simon struggles with his self-confidence.

“I have to work very hard at being charming! I’m actually rather shy, so that is the hard part for me, to play such a confident guy. I have to rely on my bravado as an actor,” he explained to the British edition of OK! magazine.

When it comes to his romantic relationships on screen, Simon has far less problems. He enjoys pretending to be in love with people, and relishes in playing “con men”.

“Faking intimacy is fine. We’re actors, con men. I like con men characters on screen and I love to be able to play one. It’s fascinating when no one necessarily knows whether I’m telling the truth or lying,” he said.
