Time to catch up with Emmy-nominated shows

The Emmy nominations are always frustrating — not only because so often the wrong actors and shows are nominated, but because so many of the best shows are on hiatus when they’re announced, leaving in the dark viewers who might want to sample them. Emmy-nominated or no, there are still some great performances to be seen on TV this week, either in reruns or original airings:

* “The Mentalist” (Sunday, 9 p.m. and Thursday, 10 p.m., CBS) Simon Baker does less dramatic heavy-lifting than the leading men he’s often nominated with, but there’s no denying his roguish charm or the sustained popularity of the show. In the first of this week’s repeats, he gets to show some slightly darker colors as he flashes back to an unpleasant memory involving his father. Then on Thursday he takes on Malcolm McDowell as a cult leader. Will his winning smile defeat the patented McDowell scowl? Even if you haven’t seen it, Mama bets you can guess.
